Turnkey Installation of Two Power Transformers
Back to Case StudiesProject Overview
RRS delivered a complete turnkey solution for the transportation and installation of two 142te transformers as part of a major UK electricity infrastructure upgrade. Our scope included receipt of the transformers directly from vessel discharge at Invergordon Port, temporary storage whilst the destination site was prepared, abnormal load transportation under police escort, final installation within a live substation, and contract lifting of ancillary equipment. By providing a single-source solution from port to final position, RRS ensured safe & efficient project delivery.

Our Approach
Early engagement allowed RRS to complete detailed engineering, route surveys and installation planning before the transformers arrived in the UK. Following vessel discharge at Invergordon Port, both units were received directly onto RRS transport beams before being relocated to engineered support stools, providing secure temporary storage until the destination site was ready. Once site preparation was complete, the transformers were transported under police escort before being offloaded and installed using hydraulic jacking and LP350 and HT300 Hydra-Slide systems. Alongside the transformer installation, RRS completed the contract lifting of all ancillary equipment, providing the transport, engineering, lifting and specialist personnel required to deliver a fully coordinated turnkey solution from vessel discharge through to final installation

Project Outcome
Both transformers and all associated ancillary equipment were successfully received, stored, transported and installed in accordance with the client’s programme, without incident. By delivering transport, storage, engineering, contract lifting and specialist installation under a single contract, RRS reduced project interfaces, improved programme certainty and provided a safe, efficient solution supporting the ongoing resilience of the UK’s electricity network.
