Bespoke Aerospace Test Rig Installation

Back to Case Studies

RRS were engaged by a key client within the aerospace sector to design, manufacture and deliver a bespoke testing rig capable of positioning a specialist test assembly with millimetre accuracy throughout a world-leading test facility.

The project combined bespoke engineering, precision manufacturing, specialist transport and an innovative three-axis movement system. By integrating hydraulic skidding technology, remote-controlled lifting and laser measurement, RRS delivered the project safely, within budget and ahead of programme.

Our Scope

To provide specialist engineering, lifting and project coordination services, including:

  • Design and engineering of a bespoke structural support frame and three-axis movement system.
  • Manufacture, transportation and delivery of the complete system.
  • Integration of Low Profile Hydra-Slide and 300-tonne Hydra-Slide systems with four remote-controlled lifting hoists.
  • Precision positioning using an integrated laser measurement system to maintain millimetre-level accuracy.
  • Testing support and repositioning of the rig throughout the programme.
  • Complete project management, engineering support and specialist installation personnel.

Our Approach

Working closely with the client, RRS developed a bespoke solution to meet the demanding accuracy requirements of the project. Following manufacture in Europe, the structural support frame was transported to the RRS storage facility before being delivered to site in line with the client’s programme.

The bespoke movement system combined the RRS Low Profile Hydra-Slide and 300-tonne Hydra-Slide systems with four remote-controlled lifting hoists, enabling controlled movement across three axes. Integrated laser measurement equipment continuously monitored the rig against four fixed datum points, ensuring millimetre-level positioning accuracy throughout the testing programme.

The efficiency of the system enabled every planned testing position to be completed ahead of programme, providing the client with additional capacity to undertake further testing.

Project Outcome

The project was delivered safely, within budget and ahead of programme. The bespoke three-axis movement system achieved millimetre-level positioning accuracy throughout the testing programme, enabling the client to complete all planned testing whilst creating additional capacity for further testing within the available project window.
