Technical Lifting & Relocation Industrial Manufacturing Sector
Back to Case StudiesRRS Group managed the successful relocation of two exceptionally large sub-sea cable drums and their ancillary equipment for a long-standing industrial manufacturing client. The project, which involved relocating drums that RRS originally installed, required careful planning, coordination, and execution to ensure a seamless and efficient process.
RRS initiated discussions at a senior level with the client, leading to the development of a lifting plan and relocation method. The use of advanced platforms and software allowed RRS to clearly communicate our design proposals and accommodate changes quickly. Maintaining open communication with all stakeholders ensured the project progressed smoothly, with minimal adjustments.
- In-House Plant – a large fleet of specialist lifting and moving plant, equipment and specialist transport
- Directly employed skilled site personnel teams
- Investment in new and versatile Valla cranes
- Creation of the lift plan, engineering design and all risk assessments
- Lifting two 32.5 tonne drums onto SPMT’s
- Transporting and lifting from original location to new, mitigating risk at all times
- Complete project management
The reduced reliance on external suppliers, ensured better control and reliability.
Project Summary – For the East Drum, a Grove GMK5250L crane was used, with a 38-meter boom and 80t of counterweight, to lift the drum onto SPMTs and transport it along the quayside. The cradle for the drum was then loaded onto transport using the same crane. For the West Drum, a Liebherr LTM1500-8.1 crane was used with a 41.2-meter boom and 135t ballast, allowing precise lifting from the original location to the new position with reduced risk.
Our Approach: RRS managed every aspect of the project, from dismantling drum covers and conducting plate tests, to plant and skilled operator supply, ensuring the highest safety and quality standards. A detailed lift plan was produced by RRS’s technical team, which ensured optimal lifting conditions using their extensive range of Modulift beams and slings.
Conclusion: The project was completed on time, within budget and met the highest standards, thanks to the expertise and dedication of RRS’s internal team. The successful relocation of the drums demonstrates RRS’s ability to handle complex machinery and capital equipment moving and logistics, providing a reliable, high-quality service for our clients. The collaboration sets the stage for future projects with our valued client.
